artist in residence
prior to this project, adam knew next to nothing about montessori education. this project opened his eyes to a new type of educational journey and provided the opportunity to work & paint with an amazing group of young learners.
the concept of the mural was centered around human rights, and was part of a school wide initiative that included other artists, such as charleston’s poet laureate markus amaker. the mural’s focus was article #1: “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
the mural process included working with students to unpack what the article means, and what it means to be human. the children were dynamic, challenging and curious—and together we created a mural with maya angelou as the centerpiece that asked the question… “what would you rise up for?”
